😔5 soul-crushingly depressing RPG games

Monday Blues got me down, so I went in search of depressing RPG games. Here’re the top 5:

1) This War of Mine

first posted on Tiktok
  • Time to beat: ~11 hrs
  • Price: $33
  • Metacritic Score: 83

If you need a reminder of how comfortable your life is, this game is it.

A survival strategy game where you control a bunch of noobs trying to survive the war, no easy feat because you have to deal with their health, hunger and moods all while working with zero survival skills

And if the base game isn’t depressing enough for you, get the DLC where you’ll need to care for a kid who will be a reminder of why you don’t have one IRL.

2) Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice

  • Time to beat: ~8 hrs
  • Price: $29.99
  • Metacritic Score: 83

Girl with an abused childhood where her father killed her mother and made her believed that she was cursed finally finds love…only to have her lover killed.

So she goes on a journey to save her lover’s soul, only to end up having to literally fight the demons of her past…and accept the fact that her lover is never coming back.

Need I say more?

Oh, the story does end on a brighter tone.

3) Soma

  • Time to beat: ~9 hrs
  • Price: $29.99
  • Metacritic Score: 84

Set in a world where Earth has already been destroyed and humans are wiped up, except of a database of brain scans. The context already gives you a heads up for the depressing ride in Soma.

This survival horror, FPS game will have you going on a mission to send the brain scan database to space, in order to save the human race.

But be warned, there is no happy ending

And you’ll be left pondering the real meaning of life.

4) Lisa: The Painful

  • Time to beat: ~11 hrs
  • Price: $19.99
  • Metacritic Score: 77

This game is more twisted than depressing, but the ending is rather depressing…so I guess it qualifies?

Lisa is a post-apocalyptic RPG set in a world where all women have perished and humanity is on its way to extinction.

The men get addicted on a soul-numbing drug that has a side effect of turning them into zombies 🧟‍♂️🧟‍♂️

Slight spoiler; everyone becomes a zombie in the end. And you play a character trying to save a female kid who hates him. That’s pretty depressing to me.

5) Disco Elysium

  • Time to beat: ~23 hrs
  • Price: $39.99
  • Metacritic Score: 91

You play a detective whose fiancé left him. He turns to drugs, gets overdosed and wakes up with memory loss.

Imagine waking up with memory loss but still have to head to work. What a depressing way to kick off a mystery action RPG.

And while trying to unravel your past, you solve the mystery of a hanged man…only to find out that this whole saga could be due to an insect that releases psychoactive chemicals that drive men crazy.

Not kidding.

Be warned, there’s a ton of dialogue and reading in this one. Another layer of depressing if reading isn’t your thing.

5.5) Pathologic

  • Time to beat: ~27 hrs
  • Price: $12.99
  • Metacritic Score: 76

I don’t know if the plot was depressing, or was it the impact of the gameplay. heck, i don’t even know how to describe this game.

The story goes: there’s a plague in town and you try to defeat it, but everything is stack against you, so be prepared to fail…

What do you think of this list? Did I miss any RPG that should have made the list?
