13 Hidden Gems you shouldn’t sleep on at this year’s Nintendo eshop Black Friday Sale

Black Friday is always one of the best times to grab some highly discounted games.

By now you’d probably have seen too many videos and tik toks recommending the usual indie games like Spiritfarer, Moonlighter or the popular AAA games like Red Dead Redemption, Live A Live, Bayonetta or the Mario line.

Instead of repeating these recommendations, I thought I should highlight some hidden gems that are going at a great deal this season.

So, here’re 13 hidden gems that you shouldn’t sleep on at the Nintendo eshop Black Friday sales this year!

1) Cris Tales (90% discount)

Cool graphics, ability to shift time and hours of gameplay, all going for $3.99. Nuff said.

You play as an orphan, Crisbell who discovers that she can manipulate time. With power comes responsibility, so its up to you to change the disastrous future by battling against the Empress of Time.

This whimsical turn-based RPG is on sale at its lowest price ever.

2) Backpack Hero (15% discount)

Explore dungeons, manage your backpack, die and die again as a cute pixel art rat. If you liked Moonlighter, you’ll like this.

You start as a female rat but go on to unlock up to 5 different characters that offer unique gameplays. Explore the dungeons, collect rare items and manage your backpack along the way.

Somewhat cozy, featuring beautiful and cute pixel art, this roguelike gave me Moonlighter vibes (p.s. Moonlighter is also on sale currently), but has a tighter gameplay loop IMO.

3) No More Heroes 3 (50% discount)

Hack and slash your anger and anxiety away while trying to wrap your head around this absurd story plot. If that’s not enough, you get to fight an alien boss named FU.

No More Heroes is the 3rd mainline entry in the No More Heroes series. You play as a otaku who is a part-time assassin who pits himself against an alien enemy aptly named FU looking to take over earth.

The story is quite absurd and the combat is perfect on days where you want an avenue to vent.

No More Heroes 3 is on sale on par with previous lows on the Nintendo eshop.

4) Cursed to Golf (50% discount)

You’re a pro-golfer who gets strike by lightning and dies. Golf your way through the 18 hell-hole course for a 2nd chance in life. Or forever be Cursed to Golf.

  • Time to beat: ~8 hours
  • Genre: Roguelike

Your goal is to become a golfing legend, but you got struck by lightning. Now, you have to conquer the Golf Purgatory, the hell-eighteen-hole course in order to be resurrected, or forever be cursed to Golf.

This golf theme roguelike game has about 70 predesigned levels which you can experience while you attempt to defeat three main bosses.

Cursed to Golf is on sale at its lowest price ever. If a Dark Souls meets Golfing manic roguelike game sounds like fun, this game is a bargain at under $10.

5) This Way Madness Lies (50% discount)

What do you get when you mash magical girls and Shakespeare? A surprisingly refreshing turn-based RPG that despite the magical girls, has legit plot and gameplay.

“This Way Madness Lies” is a turn-based RPG with an enjoyable and humorous plot, which is aptly named.

This is a rather short game that can be completed over the weekend, and might be perfect fun to complete on the Black Friday weekend. The Way Madness Lies is on sale at its lowest price ever, could be a good time to add it to your backlog.

6) The Messenger (75% discount)

A retro inspired platformer where you zip around as a young ninja. This game was from the same developers that brought us Sea of Stars this year!

  • Genre: Sidescrolling Platformer, Metroidvania

You are a young ninja fighting your way to deliver a scroll and save your clan in a world with beautiful aesthetics.

The Messenger was developed by Sabotage Studio, the same guys that brought us the popular Sea of Stars this year. Pick this up if you’d like to own the work that preceded one of the most popular games of 2023.

The Messenger is currently on sale at a price that matches previous low, could be a good time to grab this retro inspired action platformer.

7) Return to Monkey Island (40% discount)

From the classic Monkey Island series, have fun solving puzzles, interacting with NPCs and exploring locations in this well-written game.

  • Genre: 2D point-and-click

A continuation of the classic adventure games in the Monkey Island series, Return of Monkey Island is a point-and-click game where you solve puzzles by interacting with NPCs and exploring locations.

The dialogue is fun and the plot is rather interesting.

If you enjoy point-and-click games and love a good story, Return of Monkey Island is currently on sale at an All-Time Low price.

Another popular point-and-click game you might want to get during the 2023 Black Friday Nintendo Sale would be Disco Elysium that is going at a price that matches previous lows.

8) Rogue Legacy 2 (40% discount)

If you love roguelite games like Hades and Cult of the Lamb, and you haven’t heard of Rogue Legacy, shame on you.

  • Genre: Roguelite

Building of the popularity of its predecessor, Rogue Legacy 2 comes with a greater variety of character, each with its own unique weapon and gameplay experience.

While that may add to the challenge initially, it also means that gameplay will not be repetitive.

You start off as an adventurer on the quest to defeat six bosses. Each run, you get to upgrade your legacy which allows you to lock in progression that could help in the next run.

If you’re looking for a roguelite with high replayability while providing a challenge, Rogue Legacy is on sale at an all-time low this Black Friday.

9) Risk of Rain Returns (15% discount)

If recent roguelikes are too easy for you, have a go at this challenging remaster of a classic roguelike that brought made the genre popular.

A remaster of the classic Risk of Rain (one of the key gamers that led to the explosion of the roguelike genre), Risk of Rain Returns come with more content and new gameplay experience.

This roguelike isn’t a walk in a park and is perfect for those looking for a challenging game that keeps you on your toes. Difficulty rises with time and things seldom go your way. Can you survive with your skills?

If you liked roguelike such as the dark Curse of the Dead Gods, you would enjoy Risk of Rain Returns. Plus, it is on sale at an all-time low price too.

10) Neon White (40% discount)

If you like speed, parkour and fighting demons, Neon White might be right up your alley.

You play as White, a demon slayer who has to compete for his place in Heaven. To do so, you have to exterminate demons, with random magic playing cards aiding you along the way.

11) The House in Fata Morgana: Dreams of the Revenants (50% discount)

Visual novel gamers, this is a game that you should have in your repository. Hours of well written Shakespearean story that lingers even after the credits roll.

If you like a good story and visual novel that explores humanity and its vulnerability, then The House in Fata Morgana is for you.

You play as a spirit who awakens in an old mansion which of course means that you will have to explore the house and find your lost memories. Be ready for a heart tugging, Shakespearean story with dialogue that will stick in your mind even after the credit rolls.

12) Gone Home (70% discount)

Imagine heading home after a year of backpacking in Europe, excited to meet your folks and share the adventures you’ve been through…only to find that your home is now deserted, and your sister had left a note telling you not to investigate further.

  • $14.99 → $4.49
  • Metacritic Score: 86
  • Time to beat: ~3 hours
  • Genre: Walking simulator

A first person exploration video game that reminds me of Firewatch where you are in a “scary” circumstance and most of the fear is in your mind, but somehow you just can’t seem to brush off the spooky feeling.

70% is a tantalizing discount however do note that Gone Home was discounted by 75% previously.

If you like walking sims with a captivating plot, Gone Home is where you play as a 21 year old girl who returns home after backpacking overseas for a year, only to find it deserted. She has to explore the house and find out what happened to her family and why did they abandon the house.

13) A Monster’s Expedition (40% discount)

If you just want to chill out this Black Friday season, this is a cozy open world puzzle game with chill BGM that offers hours of relaxing gameplay.

  • Time to beat: ~9.5 hours
  • Genre: Puzzle, Strategy

Looking for a cozy open world puzzle game without any farming involved? A monster’s expedition could be your cozy adventure ride.

Play as a monster exploring the world, solving puzzles and learning about humans.

Great game to chill to with a cup of cocoa over the weekend while solving puzzles to a relaxing bgm.

The current 40% discount is steep but historically, A Monster’s Expedition had been discounted by up to 48%.

The following almost made the list, and I think they are still worth a mention. If the list above wasn’t satisfying enough for you, check these out too!
